Cher launches the second season with an updated, slicker intro and a dynamic two-song opener, performing “Where You Lead” in a flowing blue wrap before shedding it for a slinky purple dress and shifting into a high-energy rendition of “How Sweet It Is.” Her monologue touches on her eventful summer, though she omits the headline news—her final divorce from Sonny and whirlwind marriage to Gregg Allman. In a hilarious recording session skit, Cher struggles to sing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” with the Muppets’ Electric Mayhem while Bill Cosby, playing a dismissive producer, criticizes her lack of soul. The Smothers Brothers bring their signature comedy with a duet featuring the Muppet dog Rufus, followed by Cosby portraying a sleazy plastic surgeon pestering Cher for business in a now-ironic sketch. Cher delivers a poignant solo performance of “Send in the Clowns,” set against a massive portrait of her Time magazine cover, emphasizing the contrast between her glamorous public persona and private self. She then duets with Sweetums on “Something,” as the oversized, clumsy Muppet smashes through set pieces. The Smothers Brothers return for a skit called “The Pain Game,” where Tommy Smothers endures torture while Cher answers quiz questions, ending in his mock execution. The grand finale, “Shape-Up America,” is an exercise-themed musical number featuring Cher, the Smothers Brothers, and Cosby leading fitness routines, interspersed with comedic skits—including a misguided karate bit and a housewife fending off burglars with workout moves. Jim Henson joins the cast onstage for the closing, marking an early television showcase for the Muppets before their own variety show launch.
